The Republican Repsose to Obama's Speech

Rep Charles Boustany (LA)
  • Republicans are pleased that Obama came to address the Congress tonight
  • Republicans agree that we need to reform health care.
  • What the Republicans has been hearing from the people is that they wanted to hear Obama tell Congress to start over on a bipartisan common sense plan instead of containing on this path. Unfortunately he didn't do that.
  • This plan will make health care much more expensive. Not Boustany opinion but its a fact according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office
  • Obama said there would be no bureaucracy but in this health care reform there are 53 new govt bureaucracy
  • Obama said that he wouldn't sign a bill that crosses his desk that adds to the debt, but in fact this bill adds 100 billions to debt
  • This bill will cut Medicare by 500 billion but it does nothing to help the programs otherwise
  • Unfortunately Obama has not changed his mind on the public option, but the Republicans have their own idea of what needs to be changed.
4 areas that Congress needs to agree on:
  1. Everyone should have access to coverage.
  2. Small business and individuals should be able to join together to get coverage
  3. We should still get assistance to people who still can't received help.
  4. Need to provide incentives for wellness care and prevention
  • Republicans are grateful that they mentioned TORT reform but hope he is serious. Because in order to have real reform we MUST do this.
  • We have to be able to buy insurance across state lines

common sense reform that we can achieve right now... without taking away the freedom families cherish.
we could truly lower health care cost w/o lowering quality
